The defacto pat answer Category: Writing and Poetry I realize that every day somebody will read my writing that doesn't know my style and isn't familiar with my body of work. There's also people who are not familiar with the fact that pure poetry is written for the benefit of the poet and not to try and make their poems all things to all people. Poetry should be written in such a way that pleases you, the writer. The pace, the rhyme, the rhythm, the meaning, or no meaning at all, are all for the benefit of the person who's writing the poem. Sometimes poems don't have to mean anything. And the thing is, everyone goes through changes. The world is ever changing and our lives take twists and turns. Sometimes nothing changes at all but us. We grow weary of "meaningful" non rhyming poems or we happen to be listening to the Fugees, so we start rhyming. Art and poetry are one and the same. All forms of art are an expression of the soul of the artist. If anyone cared to look, they'd see that a good portion of my earlier work didn't rhyme comepletely. That's because someone told me their college professor told them that poems should be a pure expression of meaning and they don't need to rhyme. They just wanted to make sure they edified me with that little nugget that was passed onto them. Well let me tell you something people for the record, I didn't major in literature, but I got an A in English Lit. and I believe, (it may not be true), but I believe I have the soul of a writer. I'm not posting here on myspace to try and convince anybody of anything, I have no agenda, you could read my poems, or you don't have to read my poems. That's up to you, my happiness is not dependent on other people or things. I write what's in my soul, and if anybody here wants to edify me, I will politely say thank you and move on. That's just the way that I am. But I am not trying to win the Nobel Prize or fit into anybody else's idea of what a classic writer is, or what tasteful, meaninful literature should consist of. I really don't care what other people think who have ideas such as these. Nothing against you, but I wasn't trying to prove anything to anybody in the first place. I will never try to prove anything to anybody, here on myspace or otherwise. This isn't a popularity contest, this isn't a writing contest, I'm secure enough in myself to where I don't need to beat someone else to feel better. But rest assured, I appreciate all your comments and the fact that you took the time to read my work. I just don't have enough time in the day to keep responding to everyone's posts, so I thought I'd write a defacto post for the ones that suggest I write this type of poem or that type of poem. Or the ones that say I should clean up the sexuality.
